If you and your friends are tired of the old city cafes and want to have a fun road trip with amazing food, I have the perfect plan for you. My friends and I decided to skip the malls this weekend and headed out on the NH-44 highway towards Sonipat. We were going to Chokhi Dhani Sonipat. A place that brings the culture and authentic flavours of Rajasthan right near Delhi.
I want to tell you about my experience, the food and why you should plan a drive with your group soon.
The drive to Chokhi Dhani, Sonipat, is really smooth; it takes around one and a half to two hours from Delhi depending on the traffic. The drive is great for a late afternoon road trip with music, talking and nice views.
When you get to Chokhi Dhani, Sonipat, it feels like you are in a village in Rajasthan. You are welcomed with a greeting, a tikka on your forehead and traditional folk music. The whole place is big with mud huts, lanterns and colourful decorations.
Before you eat there are lots of things to do with your friends. You can:
Watch folk music and Kalbelia dance performances. Even join in.
See puppet shows and magic tricks; it is like going to your childhood.
Go on rides like camel rides, bullock-cart rides and a mini maze.
Try your hand at making a clay pot on a traditional potter’s wheel.
It takes around one or two hours to see all the stalls and enjoy the performances, and it will make you really hungry.

Now let’s talk about the food at Chokhi Dhani, Sonipat. The dining experience is completely traditional. You sit on wooden chairs, and servers in traditional Rajasthani clothes serve you on big brass plates. They serve you with so much love that you will lose count of how many helpings you have.
The main dishes are:
1. Dal Baati Churma: This is the dish. The baatis are crushed in front of you. Covered in pure desi ghee with a flavourful dal and sweet churma.
2. Gatte Ki Sabzi and Ker Sangri: The gatte is soft and tasty. Ker Sangri gives you a real taste of Rajasthan.
3. Bajra Roti with butter and jaggery: the rotis are hot and served with fresh white butter and gud.
4. Kadi and Bajre Ra Khichda: The khichda is comfort food at its best.
Everything is unlimited, and the people are really friendly; they make you feel like royalty.
Some things to keep in mind when you visit Chokhi Dhani Sonipat:
- The best time to visit is in the evening around 5:00 PM when the lights are on and the cultural shows start.
- The price is all-inclusive, so it is really budget-friendly for groups.
Make sure you go on a full stomach; the food is rich and filling.
If you want to spend quality time with your friends, take photos and eat a lot of food, Chokhi Dhani Sonipat is a great place to go. It is not a meal; it is a whole evening of culture, fun and delicious Rajasthani food.
